MAINE COONS

The Tail With The Cat On The End!

A LITTLE ABOUT US....

Our names are Steve & Daphne Butters and we live on the outskirts of Sheffield in a place called Handsworth, which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Handsworth also boasts the only pub situated in a graveyard!

Handsworth is situated a few minutes from the M1 and is just 10 minutes from Sheffield Airport and the railway station.

Steve is a technical representative for Tikkurila Coatings, a paint manufacturer, and Daphne is a senior science technician at a local school. Daphne also teaches within the school, using an animal care course to improve students' communication skills, both writtne and verbal.

We met at a paint company in the north-east in 1978 where we were both training as paint technologists. We both work to subsidise our cat breeding hobby.

We have both had cats since childhood, and have been interested in the Maine Coon since it first stepped onto British shores in the mid-1980's.

We have been members of the GCCF affiliated Maine Coon Cat Club since 1989. Steve is the current Secretary for the Maine Coon Cat Club, having held this position since 1999. Daphne was Secretary of the Maine Coon Cat Club from 1990 to 1999. She now edits the club newsletter, maintains the club website and is Show Manager for the club show.

Having judges who have actually bred the breed of cat they judge is very important and Daphne is a Full GCCF Judge of Maine Coons & Norwegian Forest Cats and a Probationer Somali Cat judge.

OUR LOVE OF CATS....

Daphne was brought up on a farm in County Durham, North-East England, surrounded by animals including several farm cats. Steve's parents always had a stray cat, usually surrounded by several kittens. We showed our non-pedigree cats at various shows around the country and several attended the Supreme Show.In 1989, Daphne's grandfather died, leaving her a small legacy with instructions to buy something special. With the money, she bought her first Maine Coon, a blue & white called Bealltainn Breeze. She was soon joined by a red tabby, Bealltainn Hunkdory.

The cattery name (prefix), Keverstone, comes from the area of land where Daphne spent her childhood on her grandfather's farm. It was chosen in memory of her grandfather, who played a huge part in her childhood.

We still have a couple of old non-pedigrees, although, interestingly, although we breed classic tabby Maine Coons, we have never owned a classic tabby non-pedigree. They have all been black, black & white, grey and white or tortie and white!

Apart from our Maine Coons, we do have one other pedigree cat, a tortie & white British Shorthair called Patience. To date we have bred one litter of British Shorthairs.
